Kirkstone House School

A Welcome from the Headteacher

I am extremely proud to be the Headteacher of Kirkstone House, and it is my pleasure to introduce the School to you.

It is difficult to sum up in a few words what makes Kirkstone House so special, however our commitment is to a learning environment that celebrates the uniqueness of individuals whilst celebrating all we achieve together within a caring and supportive environment. Each child is valued, nurtured and supported so that all can learn, thrive and flourish both within and beyond the classroom whatever their starting point, talents or abilities. We are a totally inclusive school and our statement that ‘The individual Counts’ shapes our direction, decisions and curriculum.

Our approach to education is highly personalised: we understand that each child’s journey is unique and we are not a ‘one size fits all’ school. Our small classes ensure that every child can be supported and challenged and our wide and varied curriculum ensures that all can succeed. In Senior School pupils can access a wide range of courses including: GCSEs, BTECS, Cambridge qualifications, Functional Skills, Life Skills, Entry Level courses and additional qualifications such as the National Arts Award. Every pupil is able to access an inspiring and challenging course of study.

Our Lower School curriculum is also wide and pupils benefit from large grassy play areas and their own Forest School. Pupils take part in a wide range of activities throughout the year and even run their own Christmas market!

Kirkstone House is like a family where everyone knows and supports everyone else. Great emphasis is placed on nurturing good self-esteem and the development of wellbeing and good mental health. The School has a Head of Pastoral Care and Wellbeing and pupil Wellbeing Ambassadors ensure that everyone has peer support. Furthermore, our approach to the development of wellbeing is also embedded in our culture and School life. Pupils have a wide range of opportunities through which to develop confidence for example, being part of our Hospitality Team; Event Managing; Sports, Drama and through charitable fund raising. Our aim is to enable our pupils to build on their talents and to be innovative which builds confidence. All of our pupils know that at Kirkstone House, they can be themselves and that their personal qualities will be valued.

You are very welcome to visit us either at open events or on a normal working day. Although we are a small school, our semi-rural campus is large with beautiful open spaces for everyone to enjoy.

We look forward to seeing you,

Best wishes,

Corinne Jones
